Abstract
This study examines the management practices adopted by Satradhikars, who oversee all activities of the Satras of Assam, bringing about significant changes in the management and administration of these institutions. They serve as role models for the Satras, which are socio-religious institutions established on the ideologies of the great saint Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankardeva in rural Assam. The study adopts the Sustainable Livelihood Framework (SLF) to analyze how Satradhikars contribute to livelihood enhancement through the effective use of five forms of capital—human, social, natural, physical, and financial. The study highlights how leadership within Satras promotes skill development, community cohesion, resource use, infrastructure development, and income generation through traditional crafts and agriculture. This study uses both primary and secondary data. Primary data were collected through personal interviews with Satradhikars and their disciples in selected Satras. The findings reveal that different management practices adopted by the Satradhikar and their functions are not only limited to socio-religious activities but also work as centers for sustainable livelihoods.
Key words: Satras, Satradhikar, leadership, sustainability, economic development.
