Abstract

This study explores the contribution of Acharya Satish Chandra Mukhopadhyay (1865–1948) to social integration and the reduction of social divisions in colonial Bengal. While existing scholarship has largely focused on his role in the National Education Movement and the establishment of the Dawn Society, comparatively little attention has been given to the social dimensions of his educational philosophy. The present study argues that Mukhopadhyay viewed education as a powerful instrument for promoting social cohesion, moral development, civic responsibility and national unity in a society fragmented by caste, class, religious and educational inequalities.

Using a historical and qualitative research methodology, the study analyzes primary and secondary sources, including Mukhopadhyay’s writings, educational discourses, records of the Dawn Society and relevant scholarly literature. The findings reveal that Mukhopadhyay sought to transcend social divisions through a holistic model of national education that combined intellectual growth with ethical character formation and cultural self-awareness. He emphasized the importance of developing socially responsible citizens who would contribute to collective welfare and national reconstruction rather than pursuing individual advancement alone.  The study further demonstrates that the Dawn Society served as an important platform for fostering cooperation, cultural consciousness and civic engagement among students from diverse social backgrounds. Through educational programmes, public lectures and intellectual activities, Mukhopadhyay encouraged young people to cultivate a sense of duty, leadership and national commitment. His emphasis on common cultural heritage and shared civic values contributed to the development of a broader national identity that transcended caste and communal boundaries.

The article concludes that Mukhopadhyay’s contribution extended beyond educational reform and played a significant role in promoting social integration in colonial Bengal. His ideas and initiatives provided an intellectual foundation for social harmony, national solidarity and civic participation. The study highlights the continuing relevance of his educational philosophy in contemporary discussions on inclusive education, social cohesion and nation-building.
